Structural Myofascial Therapy(SMFT)®

Continuing education for All Manual Therapists

4-Level Curriculum Two full days in the classroom. Each course progressively introduces more advanced techniques, deepening your work with the myofascial body through manual hands-on skills and postural somatic awareness.

Level 1

Connecting with the Fascia

Level 1 lays the foundation of Structural Myofascial Therapy® by integrating hands-on myofascial techniques with Somatic Postural Awareness (PSA) as a subjective assessment tool. Participants develop a solid understanding of myofascial anatomy and physiology while learning full-body techniques that support safe, effective clinical practice. The course emphasizes healthy body mechanics, parasympathetic regulation, and the ability to “read” the fascial roadmap in order to design coherent, responsive treatment sessions.

Prerequisite: 4.5-hour webinar

You will learn the essential foundations of SMFT:

  • Fascial and myofascial anatomy
  • Physiology
  • SMFT’s key evaluative concept: Postural Somatic Awareness (PSA)
  • Introduction to hands-on myofascial contact

In the 2-day classroom course, you will:

  • Learn, explore, and practice Postural Somatic Awareness
  • Apply PSA within objective clinical evaluations
  • Develop foundational SMFT hands-on techniques
  • Learn to feel and follow the myofascial tissue
  • Work safely within appropriate tissue depth
  • Cultivate healthy therapist posture
  • Practice techniques covering most regions of the body

Outcome: You will be able to incorporate SMFT immediately into your clinical sessions.

Level 2

Creating Specificity

Level 2 builds on the foundations of SMFT® by refining postural somatic awareness and introducing more specific techniques and applications. Participants deepen their assessment skills, learn targeted approaches for the back, hips, legs, and feet, and explore seated techniques, movement patterns, and motor control exercises. This level supports the development of precise, whole-body treatment strategies that address injury, discomfort, and postural challenges with greater clarity and confidence.

You will learn specific techniques for:

  • Back and posterior hip
  • Posterior and anterior legs
  • Feet (plantar and dorsal)
  • Calf and soleus, for deeper myofascial needs
  • Seated applications

Additional learning includes:

  • PSA explorations and discoveries
  • Somatic integration processes to address postural changes
  • A small-group workshop to integrate and connect myofascial findings

Level 3

Delving Deeper

At this stage, we enter the deeper myofascial continuities of the body. This advanced 2-day course expands your capacity to work precisely with more complex structures.

You will learn external myofascial techniques in the pelvic region, including:

  • Psoas–iliacus
  • Medial leg and pelvic ramus
  • Sacrotuberous ligament
  • Coccyx
  • Dura balancing work

Additional learning includes:

  • PSA evaluations and new discoveries
  • Somatic integration and exercises addressing postural shifts
  • A small-group workshop to support clinical application of SMFT

Level 4

Breath, Body, Mind

The culminating course of the certification series explores the profound relationship between breath, daily movement patterns, and postural alignment.

This course examines:

  • Breath physiology and chemistry
  • Breath habits, patterns, and compensations
  • How breath influences – and is influenced by our posture: from our foundational foot support, throughout the body and in connection with head alignment

You will learn techniques for:

  • Intercostal structures (supine and sidelying)
  • Clavicular girdle
  • Neck and head, including SCM and hyoid fascial connections
  • Intra-oral applications

Additional learning includes:

  • PSA evaluations and discoveries
  • Somatic integration and exercises for postural change
  • In-depth discussion woven throughout this advanced final course
